The sequence of counts describes the sample’s decay curve, and the apparent half-life from that curve verifies radionuclidic identity and purity — the textbook USP ⟨821⟩ / European Pharmacopoeia / EANM QC method for confirming that cyclotron-produced F-18 (or any target isotope) isn’t contaminated with longer-lived impurities. Sample efficiency depends on isotope energy, geometry, and how the sample sits in the tube. The Wiper Gold lets you build a volume-correction curve from 5 to 8 dilution points per isotope per tube type. Once stored, the system normalizes counting results across volumes automatically — compare a 200 µL wipe rinse to a 1 mL rinse to a 3 mL standard without doing the geometry math by hand.

4096 channels vs. the competitive deck
A multi-channel analyzer (MCA) divides the 0–1 MeV energy range into individual “channels.” More channels = finer resolution = sharper peaks, cleaner identifications, more reliable analysis. The Wiper Gold has 4096 channels. Most competitors at this price point have 256 or 64. Here’s the difference, applied to a thing your eyes already know how to evaluate.

The detail you lose isn’t cosmetic — in a real spectrum it’s the difference between resolving Tc-99m (140 keV) cleanly from a Mo-99 breakthrough sitting next to it, or seeing them as one indistinct hump. It’s the difference between identifying an unknown contamination from its photopeak signature, or shrugging.
1″¼ deep well in a 2″⅛ long crystal vs. 1.5″ deep well in a 1.75″ long crystal — and why F-18 cares
Gamma rays don’t deposit their energy in a crystal by magic. They have to travel through enough crystal mass to interact — the higher the energy, the more crystal it takes. Stopping power is everything at high energies. The Wiper Gold uses a 1″⅛ × 2″⅛ NaI(Tl) crystal with a 0.67″ wide × 1″¼-deep well, leaving ⅞ of an inch of crystal directly below the sample. The Capintec Caprac uses a 1.5″×1.75″ detector with a 0.67″×1.5″ well — the well runs nearly the full length of the crystal, leaving only 0.25″ of crystal below the sample. 3.5× more stopping mass where it matters most.
The asymmetric design is deliberate. The Wiper Gold detector is longer than it is wide — while Capintec’s is wider than it is long. Capintec’s extra side-of-well crystal might sound like an advantage, but side mass stops contributing usefully above I-125 (35 keV). At clinical-isotope energies — Tc-99m (140 keV), F-18 (511 keV), Cs-137 (662 keV), Co-57 (122 keV) — gammas going out the side interact even in a thin crystal. So Capintec’s extra side mass is wasted at every energy you actually count. What matters at high energies is the crystal mass below the sample, where gammas heading downward have to travel through enough material to be stopped. LTI puts the crystal where it does the most work.

The well runs nearly the full length of the detector. Almost no crystal mass below the sample to stop high-energy gammas. F-18, Cs-137, and Co-57 photons pass straight through the thin crystal floor without interacting. Lost counts. Lower DPM accuracy. Underreported activity at the energies that matter for PET work.

3.5× the stopping mass below the well. High-energy gammas have meaningfully more material to interact with on their way through. The result: > 80 % efficiency on Co-57 and meaningfully better F-18 / 511 keV performance than the wider-but-shorter Capintec design.
This isn’t marketing. It’s the geometry of how a NaI(Tl) crystal actually works. Look at the crystal-mass numbers on any single-well counter spec sheet — the ones that publish them. Then look at the published efficiency curves at 511 keV. The math always lines up. We’re just one of the few willing to put both numbers on the page.
AutoSpect™ Spectrum Compensation vs. flat-percentage approximations
Most counters report DPM by applying a single flat percentage efficiency per isotope — a fudge factor the manufacturer pre-calculated for the isotopes shipped in the library. Want to count an isotope not in the library? You can manually enter your own fudge factor — and live with whatever accuracy that produces. The Wiper Gold doesn’t work that way.

The visible difference shows up on the spectrum itself. Below: the same Cs-137 measurement with and without AutoSpect applied. The corrected version is what the spectrum would look like if the sample were perfectly captured by the crystal at every energy — that’s the spectrum your inspector and your isotope-ID software actually want to see. From there, the per-peak Spectrum Compensation step does the math from gammas to disintegrations, and the result is DPM you can trust.

Variable baseline subtract under keypad +/− control. Lifts the Y-axis baseline to suppress low-level counts and surface peak structure. User-controllable per scan — you decide where the floor is, the spectrum redraws against it.
Live graphical readout in the parameter strip. As count rate climbs, the DT bar fills left-to-right. Correction is applied automatically — the displayed CPM is already corrected. The bar is the diagnostic, not the correction. This screen is taken at 5,880,228 CPM; the system is still reporting accurately.
The marker is a "+" cross on the spectrum. Position it by entering a keV value (Set Marker dialog), or nudge it one channel at a time with MVMK +/− keys. MARK shows current keV, MKCT shows counts at that energy — both live as you move it.

Most product brochures show you a rendered UI mockup. This page shows you three real printouts from a Wiper Gold on our bench, scanned directly from the instrument’s own ESC/P 2 printer output. The same format prints in every operator’s lab worldwide — nothing about these is staged.
Every report carries the date and time stamp from the instrument’s internal clock, the test profile name, the configured trigger and count time, and the AUTOSPECT APPLIED notation when Spectrum Compensation is active. The on-screen MCA spectrum is rendered into each printout, giving the operator and the institution a permanent paper record of what the detector actually saw at the time of the count — not just the computed number. Results appear in DPM, CPM, Bq (decays per second), and nCi simultaneously so the lab doesn’t need a unit-conversion calculator.
The instrument-health check the firmware requires every 24 hours. A 1-minute count over the full 0–1000 keV window with the spectrum captured directly into the printout. The PASSED indicator inside the spectrum frame confirms the background is below the configured trigger. Test parameters — count time, window, trigger — are listed below the result line. Two-wipe survey using the GENERAL test profile, which scans every isotope in the on-instrument ISO Library and prints a per-isotope breakdown. Each wipe records the live MCA spectrum, the total DPM, AUTOSPECT APPLIED notation, and a tabular results section with eight columns: ISO, BKGND, DPM, CPM, Bq, nCi, HI keV, MDA. One row per isotope — Tc-99m, I-131, Ga-67, In-111, Co-57, Cr-51, Na-22, I-125, F-18, Ba-133, Cs-137, plus full-window FULL and LSFULL. Wipe 01 (top) is a clean blank. A user-defined test profile named HOTLAB targeting F-18 only, demonstrating both pass and fail behavior side-by-side. The operator named the test, selected the isotope window, set the trigger level, and the result is recorded under that custom name — user-extensible ISO Library, demonstrated.
Both wipes use the same 2000 DPM trigger and 1-minute count time. Wipe 01 (top): 84 DPM, near-baseline spectrum, PASSED ISOTOPES. Wipe 02 (bottom): 56,863 DPM, classic F-18 spectrum showing the 511 keV photopeak structure, FAILED ISOTOPES. The point of showing you these: the Wiper Gold produces documentation rich enough for ALARA records, accreditation audits, regulatory inspections, and your own QA program — out of the box, in the format your operators will print every day. The asymmetric design puts 3.5× more crystal depth below the well than the Capintec CapRAC (⅞″ vs ¼″) — high-energy gammas have meaningfully more material to interact with on their way through the crystal. This translates directly into measured efficiency, lower MDAs, and better repeatability — especially at 511 keV PET energies and other high-energy isotopes.
The Wiper Gold detector is surrounded by 0.75″ lead-equivalent shielding for radiation attenuation. Lower background means lower MDA. Combined with the extra crystal mass, the Wiper Gold delivers genuinely useful detection limits in a single-well form factor.
Inside the detector assembly, the photomultiplier tube (PMT) and crystal are wrapped in a mu-metal light shield. PMTs are extraordinarily sensitive to ambient light — even a small amount of light leakage creates enormous background counts because the PMT amplifies every photon. So a light-tight enclosure isn’t optional. What makes the LTI design different is the material: mu metal (a high-magnetic-permeability nickel-iron alloy) blocks light and channels external magnetic field lines around the PMT, eliminating the gain drift that magnetic fields would otherwise cause. The Earth’s magnetic field, nearby motors and transformers, fluorescent-light ballasts, MRI equipment in adjacent rooms — all the sources of magnetic interference that would otherwise show up as count-rate drift across the workday simply don’t affect the LTI PMT. Many lower-cost detectors solve light tightness with cheaper opaque materials (black anodized foil, plastic, paint) that provide no magnetic protection. LTI uses mu metal because one premium part does two engineering jobs.

The Wiper Gold ships as one of two well configurations — ordered per unit at build time. Both wells use the same chassis and electronics; the chamber is the only thing that changes.
Most instrument manufacturers tell customers what they can buy. We try to ask customers what they actually need to build. Because every Wiper Gold housing is additively manufactured in-house, modifying the geometry for a non-standard configuration is a CAD edit and a print run — not a tooling project. Custom configurations on a Wiper Gold are usually quoted in weeks, not months.
A real example from earlier this year. A customer needed high-energy wipe-test counting in a single-well form factor. The standard answer would have been a Multi-Wiper HE — the larger, heavier, more expensive sibling. Instead, we built them a custom Wiper Gold with a two-inch detector, the deeper lead shielding envelope it required, and the full Wiper Gold feature set: PHA mode, unknown-isotope ID, decay correction, the same on-instrument software that runs every other Wiper Gold in service. Final price came in well under a Multi-Wiper HE. Delivery in weeks.
